What Makes us Human (My Insights from Westworld)

"These violent delights have violent endings."

[Don't read beyond this if you haven't watched season 3 of Westworld and you don't want me to spoil it for me.]

Yep!

All caught up with Season 3 of Westworld and am probably gonna spend the next few days in my mind going down a rabbit hole as I explore all the concepts this show keeps introducing.

I'll be honest and say I was intrigued that Dolores ultimately wanted to free the human race.

It kind of made me wonder about her free will as well because she was built to do humans no harm and in a way she stuck to her script.

I’m fascinated by the many biblical references that Westworld has and I love the questions it raises constantly!

The questions of the creator - Arnold creating Dolores. And then the creation created the creator - Dolores recreating Arnold as Bernard.

It raises some powerful questions about God and creationism and this intimate relationship between creator and creation.

Also Dolores dying to save the human race...sound biblically familiar?

I also love this idea that it plays with AI eventually evolving to be even better at humaning than humans.

Charlotte's character is an example...Maeve, Bernard...all these characters that are more compassionate and more human than most humans in the show.

It raises some key questions about what makes us human?

And of course this season was about free will, but I feel like this question has been asked throughout season 1 and 2.

So much.

We’ve seen how hard it is to break out of a loop and break out of character and how the AI kept playing the same script over and over again and forgetting.

This also has a deep resonance of reincarnation - how we die and forget and replay the same role over and over until we become conscious.

I love that season 3 showed us that humans were trapped in the same way as the AI. Even the person who thought he was in control, was being controlled.

Which brings us back to - what is free will?

Maeve is probably the one character that has true free will, even though we see how often hers is also taken away. But her character would imply that free will comes from consciousness and awareness.

Anyway, I think Westworld may be my favorite show on TV right now because of so many things.

It really raises a lot of great questions about this humaning thing. I really recommend it if you’re into sci fi.
