How do you Feel About Talking About Money Openly with Friends and Family?
I love how in the #MoneyMagic student group we actively debate banks and investments we like and hate and give reasons why we feel the way we do.
A while back we got into a heated debate about business banking and which bank is best in South Africa for banking and receiving international payments and I actually learned a lot from people’s comments.
We openly talk about how much money we have in our accounts. I do that in my family and sibling whatsapp groups when I am looking for co-investors for projects.
But bless my family's hearts because everyone just takes a breather, stays on track and comes back with a bunch of questions on the investment.
When I wanted to move into real estate, my brother offered me a loan at a crazy interest rate after he heard all the terms of investment.
I took the loan because I had 75% of the investment money and figured 25% as a loan is not bad plus I was under a time constraint with the investment.
My cousins and siblings were also the first people to invest in the Property Magicians Property Stokvel that Mizo and I launched.
My family has gotten used to me talking about money and I’ve had my aunts and my mom sit down and show me their bank statements and discuss their financial goals because I just happen to them in the same way.
We need to seriously normalize talking about money openly and getting rid of the shame we feel around our bank accounts.
We need to heal so we stop tying money to worthiness or deservingness.
The money we have in our bank accounts doesn’t determine how worthy or deserving we are and it doesn't prove that we’re highly favored, blessed or loved by the Divine.
It doesn't make us better or less than another person.
I love how the student group is a safe space to talk about money because I can see how I just took that attitude into my family space and it has led to such beautiful conversations.
Do you have a safe space to talk about money and openly share about your finances?
